ATHENS, Ga. – The 2014 campaign for the Drake men’s tennis team came to a close on Thursday (May 22) as the Bulldogs suffered a pair of setbacks in singles and doubles, respectively, at the NCAA Championship hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Junior Alen Salibasic (Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina) returned to the court on Thursday (May 22) for a second-round showdown versus 47th-ranked Roberto Cid of South Florida.

The first set proved to be a back-and-forth affair before Salibasic fought his way to earn a 5-4 advantage. He twice held set point, but was unable to capitalize, as Cid netted two unanswered tallies to regain the lead, 6-5.

Salibasic forced the tiebreaker winning the next game before falling behind in the breaker, 5-0. He mounted a furious rally evening the score at five, but was unable to complete the comeback as Cid recorded the last two points to claim the set.

In the second frame, Cid jumped out to a sizeable advantage before holding on to complete a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory.

In doubles, the tandem of senior Robin Goodman (Cambridge, England) and junior Ravi Patel (London, England) faced a huge test battling the No. 2 nationally-ranked duo of Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese of Tennessee.

The Volunteers’ duo proved too strong in the first set jumping to a 5-0 lead before Goodman and Patel registered their first point. Libietis and Reese claimed the next tally to claim the set, 6-1.

The Vols won the initial two points in the second stanza before the Bulldogs earned their first point to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. Tennessee garnered four of the next five points to record the victory, 6-1, 6-2.

Thursday’s competition concluded the Bulldogs’ efforts for the 2014 campaign. It also marked the end of the Drake career for Goodman, who finished with the fifth-highest victory total (193) in program history.
