Marshall Named To Capital One Academic All-America First Team
DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake senior men's soccer player Nick Marshall (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) has been selected as a first-team honoree to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men's Soccer Team, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Marshall becomes the third Bulldog to earn first-team accolades joining Brian Wurst and Matt Kuhn in 2009 and 2011, respectively. He is the second Drake men’s soccer student-athlete to collect national honors twice and the first to do so in consecutive years.
Additionally, he was the lone men's representative from the Missouri Valley Conference to be named to the first-, second- or third-teams.
"Nick (Marshall) embodies what it is we hope all of our student-athletes achieve; excellence on the field and in the classroom," Drake head coach Sean Holmes commented. "He’s a super bright guy, who has worked hard and the coaching staff and his teammates are proud of this well-deserved honor.”
A computer science and chemistry major, Marshall highlighted the squad by owning a perfect 4.00 GPA, the highest GPA on the 11-member first team.
A three-time first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete selection, Marshall started all 20 games for Drake recording a team-high four goals, while adding two assists. A first-team All-MVC honoree, he led the Bulldogs to five shutouts this season, including a 1-0 road win at No. 14 New Mexico.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form.
