Bulldogs Collect 1-0 Shutout Victory Past SIU Edwardsville
DES MOINES, Iowa - Redshirt junior Jarred Arde (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport) delivered his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the ninth minute (8:32) before the Drake (7-5-2, 2-1 MVC) defense took over en route to posting a 1-0 shutout victory past SIU Edwardsville (5-6-2, 1-1 MVC) in Missouri Valley Conference men's soccer action on Saturday (Oct. 19) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
Arde’s heroics came as a result of knocking in a deflection that pinged off the far post and into the net past SIU Edwardsville goalkeeper John Berner. Earning the assist on the tally was junior Thomas Schermoly (Olathe, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas).
The remainder of the half proved to be a defensive struggle as the Cougars registered a 5-4 advantage in shots in the initial stanza.
Shots proved even more elusive in the second half as Drake bettered SIU Edwardsville, 5-2.
The only shot over the final 45 minutes to go on goal for either team was by Jabari Danzy for the Cougars with 22 seconds remaining in the contest. Pulling in the shot for his third save of the evening was redshirt freshman goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic).
The Bulldogs finished the tilt with a 9-7 advantage in shots, led by a team-high two shots from Arde. A three-shot performance from Paul Scheipeter directed SIU Edwardsville.
MacLeod earned his fifth shutout of the season after pulling in a game-high three saves. Berner recorded one save in the affair for the Cougars.
Drake returns to action on Wednesday (Oct. 23) with a 6:00 p.m. tilt at Loyola, the newest member of the MVC.
