Men's Soccer Adds Six To 2013 Squad
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake men's soccer team, under the leadership of 16th-year head coach Sean Holmes, has announced the addition of six student-athletes joining the Bulldogs' squad for the 2013 campaign.
Donning the Drake uniform this fall will be Matt Bernard (Leawood, Kan./Rockhurst), Nick Manzoni (Orono, Minn./Orono), Luke Mennen (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City High), T.J. Poll (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic), Mueng Sunday (Coralville, Iowa/Iowa City West) and Neal Usry (Shreveport, La./Shattuck St. Mary’s).
"Once again we’ve attracted a strong group of student-athletes,” Holmes commented. “I know they all can be successful students at Drake and I believe they have the ability to impact our team on the field. I’m sure that they are all working towards the goal to compete for playing time come this fall.”
Bernard, a midfielder from Rockhurst High School, helped lead his squad to a state championship during his sophomore season. He didn’t participate his senior campaign, instead playing with the Sporting KC Developmental Academy. He is a member of the Sporting KC Soccer Club.
Manzoni, a forward/midfielder from Orono High School, helped spark the Spartans to a state tournament appearance as a junior after registering 18 goals and six assists. He is a member of the Minnesota Thunder Soccer Club.
Mennen, a midfielder from Iowa City High School, has directed the Little Hawks to a pair of state tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish as a freshman. He was twice named an all-conference selection en route to leading Iowa City West to a pair of Mississippi Valley Conference titles. He is a member of the Iowa Soccer Club/Cedar River Soccer Association Soccer Club.
Poll, a midfielder from Carmel Catholic High School, guided the Corsairs to a pair of conference titles during his first three seasons. He didn’t compete as a senior, instead playing for Sockers FC Chicago Academy.
Sunday, a midfielder from Iowa City West High School, has sparked the Trojans to a pair of state titles as a freshman and junior. Twice he has been named as an all-conference performer, while being tabbed to the state all-tournament squad in 2010 and 2012. He is a member of the Eastern Iowa United Soccer Club.
Usry, a forward from Shattuck-St. Mary’s High School, played his first two seasons at Captain Shreve High School before transferring to Shattuck-St. Mary’s prior to his junior campaign. Led the Gators to a pair of state tournament appearances as freshman and sophomore en route to registering 37 goals. Has played the last two seasons for the Shattuck U-18 Club Team.
