DES MOINES, Iowa--Drake's football program took a significant step forward this week in its preparation for the coming season, determining the player leadership quartet that will guide its quest for a repeat Pioneer Football League title.
"The Drake University football captains for the 2012 season are (linebacker) Tyler Moorehead, (guard) Avery Fuhs, and (quarterback) Mike Piatkowski," announced head coach Chris Creighton. "Our team did a fantastic job of selecting four talented players who have the ability to help us reach our highest goals. All three of these men know our program inside and out and have seen its growth over the last four years. As captains in their final year, I know that they are determined to make our 2012 team the absolute best we can be."
Moorehead (Mason City, Iowa / 6'-1", 228 pounds) has started all 33 games in his career and earned first-team All-PFL honors in 2010 and '11, as well as first-team Capital One Academic All-District by CoSIDA in '11. He has 218 career tackles (150 solo), including 14.5 sacks and 40.0 tackles for loss.
Fuhs (Chariton, Iowa / 6'-4", 305 pounds) is a returning starter at right guard who has played in 18 career games and started nine. A multiple-year Community Service Captain, he brings experience and leadership to a talented offensive line unit as a fifth-year senior.
Piatkowski (Wheaton, Ill. / 6'-1", 184 pounds) is the reigning PFL Offensive Player of the Year, and holds the school record for career completion percentage (62.3%) and pass completions (595). He ranks second on Drake's all-time career lists for passing yards (6,927) and touchdown passes (54).
The Bulldogs, defending co-champions of the Pioneer Football League, open the 2012 season at home on Thursday, Aug. 30, vs. Grand View, at 7 p.m. Drake will play six home games, including a Sept. 8 clash with Montana State, and four contests against PFL competition at Drake Stadium.
