Friday was the kind of day a lucky group of Des Moines elementary school kids will be talking about for a long time.
Perhaps even more excited than the children on this day were the young men of the Drake football program. It is one of the highlights of their year when they entertain approximately 300 kids on the field at Drake Stadium at the team's annual Youth Day.
The student-athletes of the Bulldogs football program ran through drills, encouraged the children and shared tips of the game. They even shared their jerseys, making each child feel special, and giving them a glimpse of what it feels like to be a Bulldog for an afternoon.
One station allowed the team's guests the feeling of crashing through a tackling dummy, while another gave them a chance to catch a pass against a player and "take it to the house." Yet another afforded each the chance to kick a field goal through the stadium's goal posts.
All the while, head coach Chris Creighton beamed with pride, while encouraging kids and keeping them involved throughout the event, which he had introduced when he joined the program four years ago.
The team will hold its annual Blue-White Game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Drake Stadium. Admission is free. Come support your defending PFL co-champion Bulldogs!
