Cross Country Earns Academic Honors
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men’s and women’s cross country teams added to their legacy of academic excellence this winter when the teams collected three more academic honors.
As a team, both the men’s and women’s programs earned Scholar Team honors from the U.S. Track & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for achieving a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester. The women’s program boasted a team GPA of 3.66, the 14th highest mark in nation last season.
“They take great pride in their academics and are equally dedicated in their academics and athletics,” said Drake cross country coach Dan Hostager said of his teams. “It’s something they’ve put a lot of work into and it’s nice to be rewarded. It’s a very high bar so that makes it very special.”
The honor was the 15th straight for the men’s team and seventh in the last eight years for the women’s program.
Additionally, the women’s team was honored by Drake University with the prestigious Provost’s Award, given annually to the Drake program that records the highest team GPA.
“They’re in very demanding majors and it’s amazing they’re able to maintain that level of excellence,” Hostager said of his squad earning the Provost’s Award. “It’s not easy, but it’s great to see them have such dedication.”
