Cross Country Finishes Season at NCAA Regionals
AMES, Iowa – The Drake University men’s and women’s cross country team closed out their 2013 season at the NCAA Midwest Regional Friday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.
The Drake women’s team finished 17th in the 30-team field to improve nine sports from its finish at the NCAA Regional last season. Iowa State won the race on its home course with 39 points to advance to the NCAA Championships.
The men’s team did not register a team score with only three runners racing as Oklahoma State defended its regional title in the always difficult Midwest Region.
“Our women competed very well with great efforts across the board,” Drake head coach Dan Hostager said. “We moved up nine spots from last year and with most everyone returning in 2014, we’ll be looking to make another big jump.”
Taylor Scholl (Prior Lake, Minn.) continued her role as the team’s top runner by being the first Bulldog across the line in the 6-kilometer race with a time of 21:51.1 to finish 73rd. Krista Maguire (Wausau, Wis.) trailed her in 88th and a time of 21:57.8 followed by a 111th place performance from Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) and a time of 22:16.5. Cassie Aerts (David City, Neb.) and Erin Poss (Antioch, Ill.) rounded out the team’s scoring in the 212-runner field by finishing 119th and 122nd.
Doug Brady (Englewood, Colo.), who was the team’s top runner at the Missouri Valley Championship, repeated that performance by finishing in 75th for the Bulldogs with a time of 32:03.7 on the hilly 10-kilometer course. Freshman Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.) was 102nd in 32:30.4 and Ian Harkreader (Arvada, Colo.) was the final men’s competitor in 157th place in the 205-runner field.
“Our guys had some great individual efforts that resulted in a few personal bests today,” Hostager said. “Reed Fischer was one of the top freshman finishers in the region and our guys are looking forward to the upcoming track season.”
That track season starts in three weeks when the teams return to Ames for the ISU Holiday Preview on Dec. 6.
