Drake vs. Iowa

Postgame Quotes

Melsahn Basabe, Sr. Forward, Iowa          15 points, 8 rebounds, 1 block

On the start of the game
I wanted to come out and play.”

“As a team our philosophy is to go for the rebound so we always go to the rim. We had a size advantage and used it.”

On the 10-0 run

“I think we stayed in close. As an experienced player I know we can make a team break. We were able to sustain a high level.”

Roy Devyn Marble, Sr. Guard, Iowa           14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists

On cooling Drake’s shooting
“We have to make adjustments throughout the game. We are not the only team with good guards. Other teams have good guards. On a given night we have someone who can score 20. We got out in transition. They couldn’t focus on just one tonight.

Fran McCaffrey, Coach Iowa

On Peter Jok

“He is not hurting for confidence. He is going to shoot the ball. He is amazingly loose. He doesn’t get nervous about the situation.”

On the defense

“I think it is a point to be made, I have watched a lot of film of a lot of teams we have played I don’t think we have played a team yet that has a guy who averages 20.  They made eight threes in the first half. They are playing three guards. We had a size advantage.

On Melsahn Basabe

“I would just like to see him be aggressive like he was tonight. He wants to be part of a team that is winning. He was a dominant player tonight. I would like for him to be dominate every night. We are much better when he does that.”

“We are really focused on running. We are able to utilize different personnel. This is a team (Drake) that gets back well, but their bigs don’t.”

Chris Caird, Jr. Forward, Drake 21 points, 5 rebounds

On what allowed him to score
There were just leaving me open.”

On Iowa’s defense in the second half
“They started pushing me out farther but it opened it up for guys like Rich [Carter] to drive.”

On the difference in the game
“The outrebounded us by quite a few and we gave up too many offensive rebounds.”

Richard Carter, Sr., Guard, Drake 18 points, 4 assists

On the difference in the game
It all came down to rebounding. We had good first shot defense, but we couldn’t get rebounds and second-chance points really hurt us tonight.”

Ray Giacoletti, Drake Head Coach

On Iowa
They have four different guys that can push it in transition. Their transition offense is as good as I’ve seen in a long time. We played Derrick Rose when he was at Memphis, and that transition was just staggering to watch in person, but Iowa’s is a little bit different because they have four different guys that can push it. Memphis in those years Rose pushed it every time. One through four for Iowa can push it and it made it really tough.

They’re a good basketball team. There’s a reason why they played so well in the Bahamas. They’re 10 deep, they come at you in waves.”

On the loss
One game isn’t going to make or break anything. We are trying to build a program here, teach fundamentals, and it’s going to take time. We are going to do the best we can this year, and take it one day at a time and get better.”

On what he’s learned about his team
I do like where we’re at. We have four seniors, one of them didn’t play last year. We have a group that wants to get better, that’s focused, that’s bought in to our staff and there’s learning steps along the way.

They have a lot of fight left in them, and it’s a characteristic that we are trying to implement in to our guys. You have to be smart in the way that you fight.”
