Harp Sets Drake Record in the Javelin On Day 1 of the 2013 MVC Outdoor Championships
DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior throwers Kevin Harp (Iowa City, Iowa) and Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) went out in style as they claimed the Drake University school record in the javelin and hammer throw on Thursday to open the 2013 MVC Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium.
Harp's toss of 214-1 was third in the javelin while Twombly's throw of 204-6 was fourth in the hammer, besting his own record by six feet.
The Bulldogs ended the day in fifth place, scoring 14 points. They trail Southern Illinois who leads with 35. The women’s squad stands in seventh with two points, while Wichita State leads with 45.
Junior Phillip Beeler (Lenexa, Kan.) was the previous record holder in the javelin, throwing 209-11 at the NCAA Regionals in Austin, Texas, last year. Harp threw the record toss on his first throw and held on to third place the entire competition behind Wichita State’s Tom Rizzo, 231-11, and two-time defending NCAA Tim Glover, 257-0.
Freshman David Silkman (Leawood, Kan.) threw a personal best of 191-5 to finish sixth at his first conference championship. The toss was a personal best by five feet.
“I’m thrilled for both guys,” Drake throws coach Mark Kostek said. “Kevin’s record throw was a great way to finish out his home track career. David had a fabulous year. He’s made really great gains and his future is very bright. We’re very excited for the future and looking forward to having Kevin throw in Austin at the regional and hopefully we’ll get an even better result then.
Senior Briana Isom-Brummer (St. Louis, Mo.) stood out on the women’s side as the multi-event star holds sixth place in the heptathlon after four events with 2872 points. Her best result came in the 100-meter hurdles where she ran a time of 14.29 to finish third and gain 938 points.
“Bri has a busy weekend,” Drake head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown said. “She completed four events in the heptathlon, scored in the javelin and will finish tomorrow in time to run in the prelims in the 400 hurdles. Sunday is finals of the hurdles and high jump. Bri’s goal is not think about how much she has but take each event one a time.”
Isom-Brummer also earned two early points for the Bulldogs, finishing seventh in the women’s javelin with a toss of 125-5.
The first day of competition closed with night races on the track in the 10,000 meters. Junior Conor Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) earned a top-10 finish, claiming ninth in 31:07.93, a personal best by 28 seconds. Juniors Ian Harkreader and Guy Eckman (Iowa City, Iowa) also ran personal bests in the event. Harkreader finished just ahead of his teammate in 32:05.84 for 12th, and Eckman in 32:32.74 for 13th. In the women’s 10,000 meters, junior Erin Poss (Lake Forest, Ill.) ran a personal and season best for Drake in a time of 38:00.85, placing 13th.
Events resume tomorrow with the final three events in the heptathlon beginning at 10:30 a.m. and the men’s decathlon at 11:30 a.m. Field events get underway at 3 p.m. with the women’s shot put and men’s high jump and action on the oval starts at 5 p.m. with women’s 100-meter hurdles.
