Drake Women Stay In State at Musco Twilight

What’s Ahead: The Drake women’s track and field team will head to Iowa City, Iowa for the Musco Twilight meet on Saturday, April 20. Field events will begin at 1 p.m. with the women’s long jump. Track competition starts at 6 p.m. with the 4x100 relay.

Last Time Out: The Drake women claimed a two individual titles and a host of top five finishes at their first home meet of the season, the Jim Duncan Invitational on April 12 and 13.

Senior Sarah Yeager (Ottumwa, Iowa) won the 100-meter hurdles in a seasons best time of 13.86. She was followed by fellow senior Marissa Smith (Ajax, Ontario), 13.91, and freshman Destani Welch (Des Moines, Iowa), 14.56, to fill out the top three.

Yeager was also second in the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:00.78. Senior Briana Isom-Brummer (St. Louis, Mo.) was fourth in 1:01.88 while freshman Virginia Hill (Haymarket, Va.) was fifth in 1:02.21.

Junior Danyelle Cole (Kansas City, Kan.) claimed the other title in the 100 meters. Her time of 12.17 outlasted teammate junior Tiara Winston (Denton, Texas) who was third in 12.24.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Cole, Winston, Kinlow, and senior Whitney Westrum (Waukee, Iowa) was second in 47.30. The 4x400-meter relay of Westrum, Cole, Hill and Yeager was third in 3:51.11.

In the field, a pair of freshmen took home top three finishes. Jaclyn Aremka (Plainfield, Ill.) claimed second in the high jump, passing the bar at 5-3, her personal best. Kayla Bell (Bolingbrook, Ill.) was third in the triple jump with a leap of 37-1.25. Isom-Brummer was third in the long jump with a leap of 17-2.0.

A Year Ago: The Drake women successfully prepped for the Drake Relays at the Musco Twilight on April 21.

Smith claimed second in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.15 while Westrum was fourth in both the 200 and 400 meters in times of 24.76 and 56.76, respectively.

Melissa Parks (Norfolk, Neb.) won the 1,500 meters in 4:40.72.

The 4x400 relay of Winston, Ari Curtis, Smith and Westrum won the event in 46.75.

Up Next: The Bulldogs will return home to Drake Stadium to host the 104th running of the esteemed Drake Relays. Events will begin Wednesday and continue through Saturday evening.
