DES MOINES, Iowa--The Drake men's basketball program announces the addition of former Utah guard Chris Hines, who will have one year of eligibility remaining after graduating from the University of Utah in May. He will transfer at the conclusion of the school year and be immediately eligible to play for the Bulldogs in 2012-13.

The 6-foot, 185-pound Hines played three seasons at Utah after redshirting his first year in 2008-09. Last year, as a redshirt-junior, he started 26 of the Utes' 29 games and ranked second on the team in scoring (9.6), while leading the team in three-point field goals (66). Playing 30.4 minutes per game (2nd on team), Hines also added 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game.

"Chris is an outstanding young man and a proven game performer who will have an immediate impact on our basketball team," said head coach Mark Phelps. "He comes to us with championship and NCAA Tournament experience, along with demonstrated success in a BCS conference. He will provide leadership, increased basketball IQ, scoring punch, defense and toughness for our team. We are extremely excited that Chris has decided to join the Bulldogs family."

A native of Houston, Hines starred at Klein Forest High School, where he led his team to a record of 33-4 his senior season. He was named first-team all-state, all-district and All-Houston, as well as district and team MVP after a senior season in which he averaged 17 points and seven assists per game.

Hines, who will receive his undergraduate degree in speech communication, plans to pursue a master's degree in public administration. He is the sixth newcomer announced to join the Drake men's basketball program in 2012-13. Transfers Hines and Gary Ricks, Jr. (6'-1"), from Indian Hills Community College, will join four incoming freshman signees: Kori Babineaux (6'-4"; Sacramento, Calif./Foothills/Lake Forest Academy), Richard Carter (6'-0"; Detroit, Mich./Cody High School/Cloud County Comm. Coll.), Joey King (6'-9"; Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview High School) and Micah Mason (6'-2"; Allegheny, Pa./Highlands High School).
