Drake University Cheerleading
The Drake Cheerleading Team cheers for football, men's basketball, and women’s basketball. The team also makes regular appearances representing the University at alumni, athletic, charitable and public relations activities.
The Team is selected from tryouts in the spring (see below for more information). The try-out process will last for two days –Saturday and Sunday. ALL events will be CLOSED to the public.
You must be a full-time Drake University student with a minimum grade point average of 2.5, semester and cumulative. If you are an incoming freshman or an incoming transfer student you must have an official letter of acceptance attached to your application.
The team will practice 2 times per week and work on tumbling and stunting skills, as well as preparing for various upcoming appearances and games. Practice times and days will vary each semester depending on facility availability and events. All practices are held inside the Bell Center. Practice days and times for the 2013 summer sessions will be announced after the 2013-2014 team is chosen.
Drake University provides limited amount book scholarships for the Team at the end of each semester. These scholarships are awarded based on years of participation and scholastic achievement. For more information on cheer scholarships, contact the cheer team coordinator.
The Drake Cheerleading team participates in weight lifting and conditioning. The cheerleaders follow an individualized work-out program developed by our strength and conditioning coach. The team lifts two times per week during scheduled squad appointments.

Drake University Cheerleading Program invites you to try out for the 2013-2014 Cheerleading Team! You must be a full-time Drake student or incoming student with an official letter of acceptance from Drake University. Try-out applications do not need to be submitted early, please bring all paperwork to tryouts on Saturday, May 4th, 2013 at 10:00 am.

2013-2014 Tryout Stunt Clinic (Optional)
To prepare for the 2013-2014 Cheerleading tryouts, Drake Cheerleading offers a non-mandatory stunt clinic. By attending this clinic, you will learn exactly what is expected when trying out for Drake Cheerleading. The stunt clinic will take place at the Drake Bell Center April 20th, 2013 10:00am- 2:00pm. 2013-2014 Drake Cheerleading Tryout (Mandatory)
Saturday, May 4th 10:00 am- 3:00 pm
Final Tryout- Sunday, May 5th 9:00 am-1:00 pm

What to Bring:
All candidates must have completed the tryout packet which includes:
· Tryout Application with Photo
· Verification of Enrollment
· Wavier, Liability Release and Indemnification Agreement
· There is a $20.00 non-refundable registration fee due at registration.
· ONLY CASH OR MONEY ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED- NO PERSONAL CHECKS PLEASE
What to Wear:
During day one of tryouts, attire should be clean and athletic. Please wear form fitting clothing with cheer shoes or athletic shoes and have hair up and out of your face.
Ladies should be wearing the following:
· NO JEWELRY
· Sports Bra
· Athletic shorts
· Cheerleading shoes or athletic shoes
· Hair pulled half up with a bow
Males should be wearing the following:
· NO JEWLERY
· Athletic T-shirt
· Athletic Shorts
· Athletic Shoes
These attire restrictions are for your safety. Please do not wear any other team’s logo to tryouts.
Current Judging Criteria:
All candidates will be responsible for the following material:
Cheer: You are to make up your own cheer, Drake specific of course.
Jumps: Toe touch, front hurdler and a jump of your choice
D-song: We will teach you the D-song
1. Optional Standing Pass (i.e. back-handspring, standing back-tuck, toe touch back- tuck)
2. Optional Running Pass (your best running tumbling pass)
Stunts: Two stunts (i.e Extension, liberty, heel stretch, arabesque, scorpion, scale, full downs & double full downs from all stunts) if not a flyer, must be able to base or back all stunts above
Both male and female athletes are encouraged to TRY-OUT!
