DES MOINES, Iowa - An 86th-minute (85:36) goal from senior Generve Charles (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Drake women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory past Fresno State (1-3) on Sunday (Aug. 31) at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

The Bulldogs (2-2) seized the early momentum in the affair after sophomore Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) capitalized on a scoring opportunity just 3:17 into the game for her first goal of the season. Rodgers’ delivered a lofting kick from 30 yards out that deftly floated above the head of Fresno State goalkeeper Alyssa Wilson and into the net for the score.

The Bulldogs took the lead into the intermission despite being outshot in the initial half, 5-3.

Jaycee Bingham evened the contest at one for Fresno State in the 64th minute (63:26) with her second goal on the campaign. She made the most of a turnover  in the defensive backfield that resulted in her getting 1v1 with sophomore goalkeeper Kylynn Moyer (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) and ultimately beating her and a late-charging Drake defender for the goal.

Charles’ game-winning tally was set-up as a result of a shot inside the box from senior Ashlie Stokes (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) that deflected off a Fresno State defender. Charles took the rebound and headed the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.

The Bulldogs garnered a 16-13 advantage in shots on the afternoon, including 8-5 on net. Charles recorded a game-high five shots for Drake, while junior Rhian Pritchard (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) and Stokes added three and two shots, respectively, to the Bulldogs’ efforts. A four-shot performance by Bingham paced Fresno State.

Moyer hauled in four saves for Drake, while Wilson collected six stops for Fresno State.

The Bulldogs return to action on Friday (Sept. 5) opening a five-game road swing at South Dakota State. Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m.
