MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Drake women’s soccer team opened its exhibition campaign on Tuesday (Aug. 12) and came up on the short end of a competitive showdown with 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Milwaukee as a pair of second-half goals lifted the Panthers to a 2-1 victory.

“Tonight's exhibition game served its purpose,” Drake head coach Lindsey Horner commented. “This was a very competitive matchup for us, as Milwaukee's last game was in the NCAA Tournament.”

“We had seven players play their first college game tonight and they got good experience for the level of play. We are very early into our preseason, but there are signs that we can be a physical, organized squad that is dangerous in the box. We're pleased with the night and some standout performances worth mentioning include Rebecca (Rodgers) and Ashlie (Stokes), who were a handful up top, Rhian (Pritchard) at times ran the show for us in midfield and Kasey (Hurt) performed like a veteran.”

Sophomore Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) accounted for the Bulldogs’ lone tally in the affair getting past the Panthers’ defense and beating Milwaukee goalkeeper Paige Lincicum 1v1 at the 24:09 mark to give Drake a 1-0 lead. Earning the assist on the goal was senior Tori Flynn (O’Fallon, Mo./St. Joseph Academy).

The Bulldogs took the advantage into the intermission as each side registered five shots in the initial stanza.

Anna Smalley netted the equalizer for the Panthers in the 55th minute (54:05) before Sydney Senn scored the game-winning tally for Milwaukee at the 70:05 mark.

The Bulldogs were outshot in the affair 13-9, including 6-5 on net.

Senior Ashlie Stokes (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) and Rodgers led Drake with a team-high two shots apiece.  Five other Bulldogs recorded one shot apiece. Senn paced the Panthers with a game-high six shots.

Playing 45 minutes apiece in goal, freshman Haley Morris (Clive, Iowa/Valley) and sophomore Kylynn Moyer (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) registered one and three saves respectively. Lincicum pulled in four saves for Milwaukee.

The Bulldogs close out their exhibition schedule hosting Grand View on Saturday (Aug. 16) at the Cownie Soccer Complex. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.  Drake will be attempting to establish a new single-game attendance record against the Vikings.
