DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University women’s basketball program accomplished its goal of performing 1,000 community service hours during the 2013-14 academic calendar year.

Head coach Jennie Baranczyk along with the student-athletes, coaches and staff set a goal in June of 2013 to help out and give back not only to the Drake community, but to the entire Des Moines community.

The Bulldogs kicked off the initiative with a Habitat for Humanity service project and continued throughout the year volunteering at many different events at Drake and in the metro area, including working at events geared for kids, assisting at local homeless and emergency shelters and visiting local senior care centers. The team also returned to work with Habitat for Humanity for its Hammers and Heels program as well as lending a hand at several on-site and off-site Drake Relays events.

“It was an incredible experience and one that brought us together even more,” senior Kyndal Clark said. “We were exposed to many different people, settings, challenges and opportunities this past year and it was an honor to give back to our community.”

The women’s basketball program has established this initiative as a yearly challenge and has already set a goal of completing another 1,000 hours during the 2014-15 academic year.
