Pierce Earns Third-Straight MVC Academic Honor
ST. LOUIS – Senior Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) of the Drake University softball team earned her third consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete accolade while junior Sarah Ryan (Mount Vernon, Iowa) garnered her first-ever scholar-athlete honor as each were named an MVC Scholar-Athlete honorable mention selection, the league announced Monday, May 19.
Pierce, who was selected to the MVC Scholar-Athlete first team the last two seasons, holds a 3.39 overall grade point average in pharmacy. A three-time all-MVC first team selection at shortstop, she started 183 consecutive games to close out her playing career. In her final season, she batted .294 with a team-high nine doubles, six home runs and 24 runs batted in along with a team-leading 25 stolen bases. Pierce is Drake’s all-time record holder in career runs scored (136) and stolen bases (92).
Ryan was the defensive anchor for the Bulldogs in center field as she committed just one error in her junior season, while posting a .987 fielding percentage. A Mathematics major with a 3.93 grade point average she was awarded the 2012-13 and the 2011-12 MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Awards, respectively.
In order to be eligible, student-athletes must have a 3.2 GPA or higher, be at least a sophomore in athletic and academic standing at their institution and meet certain playing requirements.
