DES MOINES, Iowa – More than 7,000 runners, including some of the top road runners in the world, took to the streets of Des Moines on Sunday morning for the Hy-Vee Road Races at the Drake Relays. Despite a one-hour delay due to a brief thunderstorm, the competition was fast and fierce as the field competed for $140,000 in prize money.

Following the delay, the half marathon field hit the course first with the top men’s and women’s finishers each earning a $12,000 check. Mosinet Geremew, a native Ethiopian, was the first men’s finisher in 1:03.34. The time was more than three minutes off his personal best in the event as the hilly course and final climb up ‘Bulldog Hill’ on 28th Street challenged all runners.

Kenyan Kimutai Cheruiyot finished just behind the leader in 1:03.35 as the top five finishers were all within six one-hundredths of a second of each other.

The women’s race saw Morocco’s Rkia El Moukim pull away from the field by more than 20 seconds to win in 1:11.18.

“I’m happy to win because it was very hilly and I was happy to see the finish line,” El Moukim said shortly after crossing the finish line.

“They asked me yesterday what I would do with $12,000.” El Moukim added. “I said, ‘I’d buy a car.’ Now that I’ve won, I can buy a car!”

Kenya’s Risper Gesabwa finished second in 1:11.41, the fastest half marathon time of her career. Urbandale’s Danna Kelly Herrick, a 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials participant was the top Iowan to finish, coming in seventh in 1:18.22.

The 10k races got underway at 9 a.m. with the fields competing for $30,000 in total prize money. Birhan Nebebew of Ethiopia won the men’s race and $5,000 prize in 28:17. Etalemahu Habtewold was the top women’s finisher in 32:36. Des Moines’ Ellen Ries, the 2012 Grand Blue Mile Champion, also finished in the money in fifth-place in 37:18.

Nelson Oyugi won the men’s 5k in 13:59 by holding off two challengers on his heels with a late surge.

“I turned the corner into the stadium and looked back quickly,” Oyugi said. “They were battling each other. I made a push and extended my lead. It feels good to be the winner.”

Both Haile Tegegn and Diriba Degefa crossed the finish line just two seconds later. Bertukan Feyisa was the top women’s finisher in 16:15. Each winner got $2,000 for their first-place finishes.

The Hy-Vee Road Races mark the official close of the 2014 Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee. All told, more than 11,000 competitors competed in the Relays. The 2015 Relays are scheduled for April 22-25, 2015.
