Drake Claims Extra Innings Victory At Indiana State
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Senior Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.) led off the game with a home run and junior Laura Brewer (Waukee, Iowa) launched a solo home run in the 12th inning and it was all the runs the Drake University softball team needed as it won 2-1 in 12 innings at Indiana State on Sunday.
Brewer has now hit seven home runs in the last seven games for Drake (17-29, 9-12 MVC), who claimed the weekend series with Sunday’s victory in the rubber match between the two teams.
Junior Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) pitched 9.2 innings and allowed just one run, which occurred on a solo shot by Megan Stone of Indiana State (7-16, 9-12 MVC) in the sixth inning. Schmidt struck out seven and walked just two to earn the win and move to 15-11 on the season.
Senior Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) started the contest and pitched 2.1 innings before being relieved by Schmidt with runners on first and second with one out. Schmidt worked out of the jam and pitched the rest of the game for the Bulldogs.
Schmidt collected a team-high three hits as well. Pierce and senior Liz Buck (Overland Park, Kan.) each added two hits. Gronewold and Pierce each swiped two bases.
Drake will have a fast turnaround as it stops at Illinois State on Monday, April 28 to make up two previously postponed games with the Redbirds. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m. The third game of the series will not be made up.
