Loyola Holds On For 4-3 Win Over Drake
CHICAGO – Playing for the first time as league mates, Loyola held on for a 4-3 win over the Drake University softball team Saturday afternoon in the opening contest of a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series.
Loyola (11-15, 2-2 MVC) claimed a 4-0 lead after three innings as the Ramblers took advantage of two Drake errors. The first miscue came in the second frame as a two-out error by Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) was followed by an RBI single. The other three runs were scored in the third inning as the Ramblers had two hits and Drake committed its other error.
Freshman Kaitlyn Finneran (Morrison, Ill.) blasted her second career home run in the fifth inning to put Drake (6-21, 0-4 MVC) on the scoreboard. Her solo shot trimmed Loyola’s lead to 4-1.
The Bulldogs moved within one run at 4-3 after they tallied two runs on one hit and used a Ramblers’ error in the sixth inning.
Drake threatened in the final inning as senior Liz Buck (Overland Park, Kan.) ripped a one-out double. After Nybo’s walk, senior Cortney Wood (Alburnett, Iowa) lined out to the shortstop as Loyola held on for the victory.
Senior Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) started in the circle for the Bulldogs and took the loss as her record drops to 0-5 on the season. Gronewold allowed four unearned runs on three hits in 2.2 innings. Junior Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) was dominant in relief holding the Ramblers hitless, while giving up just one walk and striking out two in 3.1 innings.
At the plate, freshman Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Nybo collected one hit and drew two walks. Drake stranded eight base runners in the game.
The two teams will close the weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 10 a.m. with the games being played at DePaul University’s Cacciatore Stadium.
