Softball Falls To Southern Illinois
CARBONDALE, Ill. – After nearly two weeks since its last game, the Drake University softball team dropped a pair of contests to Southern Illinois on Saturday at Charlotte West Stadium. Drake and SIU were originally scheduled to play at Ron Buel Field in Des Moines this weekend, but the series was moved due to cold temperatures.
The Salukis won by scores of 3-0 and 6-3, respectively, today to improve to 12-12, 2-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Drake falls to 6-18, 0-2 in the MVC.
In the opening game, neither team tallied a hit until the Salukis broke through in the top of the third inning with four hits and all three of its runs. Taylor Orsburn led off the frame with a double and came around on Jayna Spivey’s RBI single. SIU tacked on two more runs on Shaye Harre’s two-run triple off of Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.), who replaced starter Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa). Schmidt settled in after the triple retiring the next two batters.
Drake came so close to breaking through in the bottom of the inning as Liz Buck (Olathe, Kan.) started off with a double and Gronewold reached on an error as Buck moved to third base. However, Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) lined out to end the scoring chance.
The Bulldogs put base runners on in every inning after, but could never record the timely hit to put runs on the scoreboard. Buck led the Drake offense with two hits in the game
In the second game, SIU grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a run in the first inning and another run in the second. Drake’s bats broke out in the bottom of the second as Gronewold’s two-run double squared the score at 2-2. Later Buck plated Gronewold with an RBI groundout to give the Bulldogs their first lead at 3-2.
The lead didn’t last long as the Salukis answered with two runs in the fourth inning off Schmidt and added runs in the fourth and sixth inning to secure the win.
Sophomore Mariah McKinnon (Oxford, Iowa) started game two in the circle for the Bulldogs and took the loss to fall to 1-6 on the year. Gronewold took the loss in the opening game as her record drops to 0-4 on the season.
Drake’s first MVC series scheduled at Illinois State for last weekend (March 15-16) was postponed due to unplayable field conditions. Drake’s last game action was against then ranked No. 17 Minnesota on Sunday, March 9 in Stillwater, Okla.
A single game on Sunday at noon will close out the series between the two teams. Live stats will be available here.
