Softball Loses Two Games On Final Day Of Rosemont Rumble
CHICAGO – The Drake University softball team lost to Central Michigan and Western Illinois on the final day of the Rosemont Rumble by scores of 6-0 and 10-4, respectively.
In the first game, Central Michigan put two runs on the scoreboard in the second inning, taking advantage of two Drake (0-4) errors, as Karly Hansen had a pinch hit two-out, two-run double off of Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.). The Chippewas added a run in the sixth and three in the seventh as they cruised to the win.
Western Illinois scored two runs in the first inning on a solo home run and an RBI single, but Drake answered with four runs the following inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Two of the runs came off a two-run double by freshman Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.), who finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. The other runs came from a fielder’s choice and a RBI groundout.
However, the Bulldogs did not hold the lead for long as the Leathernecks tacked on six runs to pull away for the victory.
Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) tossed 1.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and took her first loss of the season. Schmidt relieved Gronewold and was roughed up allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits with four walks in 4.1 innings.
Drake travels to Waco, Texas next week for the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor University. The Bulldogs take on Lipscomb Friday, Feb. 14 at 12:30 p.m. before closing the first day against the host Bears at 5:30 p.m.
