Women's Basketball Falls At Missouri State
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Spurred by a late run in the first half, the Missouri State Lady Bears beat the Drake University women’s basketball team, 89-66, Saturday afternoon at JQH Arena.
A pair of free throws from freshman Caitlin Ingle (Runnells, Iowa) with 6:50 left in the opening half tied the game at 31-31. However, it was the final points of the half for the Bulldogs as Missouri State (7-8, 2-2 MVC) closed with a 14-0 run to take a 45-31 halftime lead.
Drake (7-9, 1-4 MVC) junior guard Kyndal Clark (Webb City, Mo.) had a team-high 21 points, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Ashley Bartow (Sun Prairie, Wis.) was the other Bulldog to score in double-figures with 10 points.
Clark’s three-pointer at the 8:26 mark in the first half gave Drake its final lead of the game, 28-27. Clark finished one three-pointer shy of her career-best and added a team-leading five rebounds.
Clark and freshman Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs. Mo.) paced Drake in the first half with 11 points and six points, respectively. The Bulldogs started the game 11-of-19 (57.8 percent) from the field, but missed their final 10 attempts of the half.
At the start of the second half, Bartow ended the scoreless drought with a layup off an assist from Ingle, who started in place of senior Alyssa Marschner (Plymouth, Minn.). It was not enough though as Lady Bears pulled away for the win in the second half. Ingle finished with three points, four rebounds and five assists.
The Bulldogs made 22-of-25 (88 percent) from the free-throw line led by sophomore Emma Donahue (Naperville, Ill), who drilled a career-best 6-of-6. Drake’s bench scored 23 points today led by redshirt junior Carly Grenfell’s (York, Neb.). Grenfell is averaging 8.7 points a contest off the bench in the last three games. Wendell finished with eight points.
Drake travels to Wichita State on Monday, Jan. 20. The game against the Shockers will be broadcast on MVC-TV (Fox Sports Network, Comcast, ESPN3) and will tip at 3:30 p.m.
