Laurel Sanford, a three-year starter for the Bluejays at the middle blocker position, played at Creighton from 2008 to 2011 and helped the Bluejays win 50 Missouri Valley Conference matches in her career. She led the Jays in blocks and kills her senior season and was named first-team all-MVC.

Sanford was a co-captain her final two seasons and earned second-team all-MVC honors her junior year. Creighton was selected to the NCAA tournament that season and defeated Iowa State in a five-set thriller in the opening round before falling to Minnesota in the second round. The win over the Cyclones was the program’s first NCAA tournament match.

“I’m thrilled to have Laurel join us,” McBroom said. “She was an all-conference standout in the middle for Creighton and will be a great coach for our middle blockers. Not only does she have an impressive playing background, but she has knowledge and experience of the other programs in the Valley and in the region. She’s an outstanding addition.”

Sanford served as an assistant coach for the Marian High School volleyball team last fall and helped lead it to the Nebraska state championships, where it finished second. She has been a coach with the Premier Volleyball Club the last four years and played for Northern Lights, one of the top club teams in the Minneapolis-St. Paul region.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to coach at Drake,” Sanford said. “To be able to start my collegiate coaching career in a conference I’m familiar with and with Darrin, who I have known for several years, is great. Coaching is my passion and I can’t wait to get started.”

The Eagan, Minn., native spent this past academic year working as an intern with the Creighton athletic department, while finishing her degree requirements. Sanford graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies.
