Drake Football Names Its Captains For 2013
DES MOINES, Iowa – The defending back-to-back Pioneer Football League champion Drake University football team has announced its three captains for the upcoming 2013 season.
Brandon Coleman (Cary, Ill.), Kevin Marshall (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Mike Ratelle (Edina, Minn.) were chosen by their teammates to serve as captains as the Bulldogs begin the quest for their third straight PFL title and the seventh in program history.
“It is a huge honor to be chosen to lead and represent a team of such talented and driven young men,” Drake head coach Chris Creighton said. “There are many great leaders on our team that received votes from their teammates, but these three rose to the top and will do a tremendous job captaining our team. However, it will take every one of us committing to achieve greatness for us to reach our full potential as a team.”
Coleman, a fifth-year senior on the defensive line, is a two-time all-PFL honoree and recorded a team-high 12 sacks last season to rank in the top-25 nationally. Off the field, he was a CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District selection in 2012 and has twice earned PFL All-Academic honors.
“It’s very humbling to know that a team full of leaders chose me to be a captain for the season,” Coleman said. “To me, this is a greater honor than winning any performance-based award. I am looking forward to working with Kevin and Mike to bring the team to where we want to be next season in winning another PFL title and contending in the playoffs.”
Marshall assumes a captain’s role in his fifth year in the program that has seen him become one of the top tight ends in the PFL. He has twice been named honorable mention all-PFL. Last season, he caught 53 balls for 500 yards and had a season-high 110 yards receiving in the win at Jacksonville to seal the PFL title. He is also a three-time PFL Academic Honor Roll member for his work in his biochemistry/cell and molecular biology curriculum.
“Our program has an amazing opportunity to go where it has never gone before with a playoff berth on the line,” Marshall said. “I know the men on our team are more than capable of making this happen and I am extremely excited to help lead the charge.”
Ratelle returns for his fifth season at Drake as the team’s most experience defensive back following a 2012 season that saw him make 44 tackles with two interceptions. As one of the team’s top kick and punt returners, he racked up 269 kickoff return yards including an 88-yard return for a touchdown at Valparaiso. He also had three punt returns of 30 yards or more and averaged 21.5 yards per return. Last season, he was also named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District team and the PFL All-Academic team.
“It has been a long time since our class senior first arrived at Drake University,” Ratelle said. “Now that it is our final season, I am honored that my teammates have selected me as a captain to lead this team.”
The three captains will lead the Bulldogs into the 2013 schedule on Aug. 29 with the season opener against Grand View at 6 p.m. The opener is one of six home games on the home schedule that includes contests against Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Valparaiso, Morehead State and Dayton.
