DES MOINES, Iowa – Owen Monroy has been hired as an assistant volleyball coach at Drake University, head coach Darrin McBroom announced today.

Monroy spent the 2012 season as the volunteer assistant coach at national powerhouse and 2012 NCAA semifinalist Penn State. He brings a diverse background to the Bulldogs’ program after serving as an assistant coach at the collegiate and professional level, a head coach at the club level and as a collegiate player.

“I feel very good about Owen,” McBroom said. “His experience level complements mine very well. He did a lot of video work and opponent scouting last year at Penn State. We share a coaching mentor so we have similar coaching influences and he brings integrity to our program. I’m excited to have him on board.”

Prior to Penn State, Monroy was the first assistant at Westminster College (NAIA) in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he assisted in all areas of technical coordination, recruiting, on-court coaching and operations.

Monroy was an assistant coach for the Utah Unity, a professional team, which debuted in the inaugural tournament for the Premier Volleyball League at the 2012 U.S. Open. During the summer of 2011, he served as a head coach with the USAV High Performance Indoor program through the Intermountain Volleyball Association. He also spent two summers as a head coach with USAV High Performance Beach and coached at the club level with High Country Volleyball Club from 2010-12 and with the Capital Area Volleyball Association from 2004-2008.

The Bowmansdale, Pa. native graduated from Messiah College in Grantham, Pa. in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in music business. He was a member of the school’s men's volleyball team and helped the squad win the 2008 NIRSA Division II National Championship, as well as three Mid-Atlantic Conference Championships. He earned first-team all-conference honors as an outside hitter. He returned to his alma mater for the 2013 season as the associate head coach for the men's squad, which won the Division II NCVF National Championship with a record of 23-0.
