Drake Notches 7-0 Triumph Over UMKC
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake men's tennis team completed a doubleheader sweep on Friday (Feb. 1) following the Bulldogs' 7-0 victory over UMKC at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The tandem of senior Jean Erasmus (Windhoek, Namibia) and sophomore Alen Salibasic (Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina) captured the doubles point for Drake recording an 8-2 win versus Nino Hasandecic and David Heckler at the No. 2 position.
The Bulldogs opened up singles with victories from Erasmus and senior Anis Ghorbel (Sfax, Tunisia) to stake Drake to a 3-0 lead.
Erasmus bested Daniil Ivanov at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0, before Ghorbel got the better of Hasandecic at No. 1, 6-3, 6-0.
Earning the match-clinching tally at the No. 3 hole was Salibasic, who notched a 6-0, 6-1 triumph against Grant Fleming.
Within seconds of one another, sophomore Ben Mullis (Leicestershire, England) and senior James McKie (Edinburgh, Scotland) added wins for the Bulldogs. Mullis finished off Connor Edwards at No. 5, 6-0, 6-3, before McKie netted a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 victory on court No. 2 over Tomas Patino.
Sophomore Grant Tesmer (Lincoln, Neb.) capped the win total for Drake with a 6-1, 6-4 decision versus Andrey Smirnov at No. 6.
The Bulldogs close out their four-match homestand on Sunday (Feb. 3) battling Green Bay and Nebraska-Kearney at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. Match times are slated for 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
