Men's Golf Signs Richardson And Smith To National Letters Of Intent
DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake head men's golf coach Matt Lewis has announced the signing of prep standouts Brady Richardson (Tulsa, Okla./Union) and Karter Smith (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes) to national letters of intent to join the Bulldog program for the 2013-14 academic year.
"I am very pleased with our two incoming freshmen," Lewis commented. "Both will be a big part of the team and contribute to our future success."
Named an all-metro honoree each of his first three campaigns at Union High School, Richardson earned first-team all-conference accolades as a junior en route to being named his squad's player of the year. In 2011, Richardson captured the Oklahoma Golf Association's Junior Amateur Championship.
"Brady (Richardson) is the third-rated golfer from Oklahoma," said Lewis. "He is an extremely talented player and has the ability to go low. He will have a chance to compete next year and contribute right away. Brady is very excited to come to Drake and we are very lucky to have him joining the team."
A three-time all-state selection at Detroit Lakes High School, Smith has helped lead the Lakers to back-to-back Minnesota 2A state titles. Named team most valuable player in each of his first three seasons, Smith has registered a team-low scoring average every year.
"Karter (Smith) is one of the top golfers from Minnesota," Lewis explained. "He is coming off a great season with many top finishes. He recently won the Minnesota PGA Player of the Year award and he has grown up around the game of golf with his dad being a PGA professional. Karter is a very hard worker and is remarkably consistent. I am extremely excited for Karter to join the team next year as he is a great fit for us who has the ability to have an immediate impact as a freshman."
Richardson and Smith are the first student-athletes to sign a national letter of intent with Lewis and the Bulldogs for the 2013-14 campaign.
