Bulldogs Close Competition At Drake Relays
DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men’s and women’s track and field teams closed out competition at the Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee on Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
The Bulldogs had three top-10 showings on their home track in front of a sellout crowd of 14,504 with Rob McCann (Mississauga, Ont.) recording two of them to continue his strong sophomore season. McCann, who finished ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last year at the Relays, improved with a third place finish this year. Using a strong kick to close down the homestretch he finished in 8:58.78.
“I was really nervous going into this race and knew a lot of people would be watching me,” McCann said. “I feel like I have a pretty good kick and I don’t like to rely on it, but it helped me out a lot today.”
Later in the afternoon, McCann returned to the track to finish fifth in the 1,500 meters with a personal best time of 3:47.09 for a nearly six-second improvement over his best time a season ago.
“It’s all about progression and I feel like I’m in a good spot with the progression and know if I have confidence in myself it will come together,” McCann said.
Doug Brady (Englewood, Colo.) was 11th in the same race in 3:56.78.
The women’s team competed in three events on Saturday with Sarah Yeager (Ottumwa, Iowa) placing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.93.
The women’s distance medley relay team of Taylor Scholl (Prior Lake, Minn.), India Knight (Germantown, Md.), Samantha Nielsen (Maplewood, Minn.) and Melissa Parks (Norfolk, Neb.) was 14th in 11:59.11.
Both teams return to action next Saturday at the Musco Twilight meet in Iowa City, Iowa.
