DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake Relays director Brian Brown announced the final elite event for the upcoming 2014 Drake Relays Presented by Hy-Vee with five of the world’s top women’s 1,500-meter runners set to compete on the Blue Oval. In addition to the completion of the world class field, Brown and Hy-Vee Director of Event Marketing Darin Hirl updated planned enhancements for the Hy-Vee Road Races at the Drake Relays.

Just 10 days remain until the Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee get underway at Drake Stadium, leading to the creation of an exciting ’10 Days’ promotion leading up to the Relays. For the next four days, fans have one of three ways to celebrate the Relays.

For a limited time, fans can purchase $10 general admission tickets to the Friday night session of the Relays online here by using the discount code ‘HyVee.’ Fans who purchase tickets and those that already have will be entered into a drawing to win two tickets to the Drake Relays for the next 10 years. Finally, those who want to participate in the Drake Relays can receive $10 off their registration for the Hy-Vee Road Races at the Drake Relays by clicking here and using the discount code ‘HyVee’ to save $10 off an entry to the 5K, 10K or half marathon race. All three offers expire on April 18 at 11:59 p.m.

Those that take advantage of the $10 general admission ticket for the Friday night session of the Relays will have the opportunity to watch that elite women’s 1,500-meter race and seven other World Championship Rematch events on Friday evening.

Joining the fray in the women’s 1,500 meters is World Championship bronze medalist Hellen Obiri who is currently ranked third in the world. The Kenyan will be pushed by three other women ranked in the top 10 in the world including American Brenda Martinez, who was the World Championship bronze medalist in the 800 meters and is ranked seventh in the world in the 1,500 meters, and Shannon Rowbury who is eighth. Gabrielle Anderson and her No. 10 ranking along with 15th ranked Sheila Reid round out the field that will duel for just under four laps around the Blue Oval.

With the field set inside Drake Stadium, excitement is building for action outside on the streets of Des Moines for the Hy-Vee Road Races at the Drake Relays. With Hy-Vee’s continued efforts to promote wellness in the communities it serves, 8,000-to-10,000 runners are slated to hit the pavement on April 27 to vie for one of the largest road race purses in the nation with $140,000 being awarded to the top finishers. Those amateur racers in the 10K and half marathon races will be in a field that also features some of the best professional distance runners in the world that are aiming to put up fast times on courses that will finish inside Drake Stadium.

Competitors in the 10K and half marathon will also traverse ‘Bulldog Hill,’ a gradual but challenging rise up 28th Street during the final stages of the races. Cheered on by crowds, live music and pace-setters, runners will be timed up the hill with the fastest male and female athlete up ‘Bulldog Hill’ in all age groups receiving a commemorative medal. The medal will bear the image of Porterhouse, Drake’s beloved live mascot bulldog that passed away in December.

Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee competitions get underway on Monday, April 21 with the staging of the first-ever High Jump at Hy-Vee with some of the world’s best high jumpers taking off inside Hy-Vee’s Waukee, Iowa, store. Activities continue on Tuesday with the Grand Blue Mile on the streets of downtown Des Moines and Wednesday with the annual pole vault inside Jordan Creek Town Centre. Thursday’s distance carnival begins action in earnest inside Drake Stadium with two full days following on Friday and Saturday prior to the conclusion of the Drake Relays with the Hy-Vee Road Races.
