Men's Golf Signs Pair To National Letters Of Intent
DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake head men's golf coach Matt Lewis has announced the signings of prep standouts Drew Ison (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Sante Fe) and Matt Lavery (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) to national letters of intent to join the Bulldog program for the 2014-15 academic year.
“I am very excited for Matt and Drew to join the Drake men’s golf program,” Lewis commented. “Both are quality individuals, who are extremely talented and will fit nicely into the team and school. They each have a bright future at Drake and I’m looking forward to welcoming them to the team.”
A two-time individual state qualifier at Edmond Sante Fe High School, Ison garnered seventh- and 11th-place finishes as a sophomore and junior. He helped lead the Wolves to third-, fourth- and ninth-place state performances in 2013, 2012 and 2011, respectively. Ison has captured seven tournament titles during his prep career entering his senior season this spring. Garnered an 11th-place finish at the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) KPMG Stacey Lewis Junior Open and a 13th-place showing at the AJGA Lockton Kansas City Junior in 2013.
“Drew will be a huge asset to our team,” said Lewis. “He is one of the top junior golfers from Oklahoma who has competed at a high level for many years. He followed a very solid summer up with a strong fall and is a great student who will potentially provide an instant impact to our squad.”
A two-time all-state selection at Dunlap High School, Lavery sparked the Eagles to an Illinois runner-up finish in the 2A state championship as a senior. A three-time all-conference performer, including earning first-team accolades each of the last two campaigns, Lavery was named the 2012 Peoria Journal Star Player of the Year after an individual state runner-up finish. He was selected as a first alternate for the United State Junior Amateur in 2013 as well as competing at the Illinois State Amateur. Lavery has posted multiple top-20 performances in AJGA tournaments during his prep career.
“Matt will be a great addition to the team,” Lewis explained. “He is a hard-working individual who is dedicated to both golf and school. He is one of the top junior golfers from Illinois, having had a very successful junior golf career, both at the state and national levels. Matt is an excellent student, who I’m looking forward to coaching next year. I expect him to be competitive for us immediately.”
Ison and Lavery are the initial student-athletes to sign national letters of intent with Lewis and the Bulldogs for the 2014-15 campaign.
