Bulldogs Selected To Partake In 2014 ITA Kick-Off Weekend
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake men's tennis team has been selected to participate in the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend (Jan. 25-26, 2014). The Bulldogs will travel to Waco, Texas, as the event's second seed to battle third-seeded Auburn on the campus of Baylor University.
Drake finished the 2013 campaign ranked 27th nationally, while Auburn was rated 29th. In the other half of the draw, No. 12 Baylor will face No. 46 Boise State.
By virtue of their top-64 finish in the final ITA rankings, the Bulldogs earned an automatic bid to the event. The ITA held a national draft on Thursday (June 6) with teams getting to choose one of 15 four-team locations. The ITA called out to each school, in rank order, at predetermined times. Highest ranked team not a host/on the board selected which of the 15 sites they wanted to go to. When called they chose where they wanted to play, then the next highest team was called and selected, and so on.
First-round winners and losers face each other in the second round. The 15 teams that win both matches advance to ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by Texas A&M University, played two weeks later, Feb. 14-17, 2014.
"The team is very excited about competing in the ITA Kick-off for the second consecutive year," Drake head coach Davidson Kozlowski commented. "It is a great event consisting of the top-64 teams in the nation and it gives us the opportunity to see and compete against the best teams in the country. We look forward to a rematch with Auburn after losing to them in the 2012 NCAA Championship."
