Lake Finishes Sixth To Lead Young Bulldogs At 2012 MVC Championships
NORMAL, Ill. — Kirsten Lake capped off her Drake women's cross country career with her best-ever finish at the 2012 Missouri Valley Cross Country Championships. The fifth-year senior finished the 5-kilometer race at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Ill. in 17:47 to finish sixth.
Three freshman scored points to help the Bulldogs finish seventh in the 10-team field. Taylor Scholl was the second Drake runner to finish after Lake, finishing in 26th place in 18:21.
Celeste Arteaga, Amanda Marwitz, and Emma Huston finished 45th, 46th and 47th, respectively, in the field of 75 runners. Arteaga crossed the finish line in 19:11 with the junior Marwitz a second behind her in 19:12. Huston followed in 19:14.
"It was great to get this type of experience for our younger students." Drake head coach Dan Hostager said.
Freshman Cassie Aerts was the next Bulldog to finish in 53rd place in 19:31. Mariel Fulton (19:36) and Allie Heifner (19:38) followed in 56th and 62nd place, respectively, to round out the team's scoring.
The meet was won by Aliphine Tuliamuk-Bolton of Wichita State in 16:59. Hosts Illinois State dominated the field to win the team title with 42 points.
Drake will compete next at the NCAA Regionals in Springfield, Mo., on Friday, November 9.
