As a team, the Bulldogs posted a 322 score to stand in 18th place among a talented field.
"We struggled as a team today with everyone having a bad day," Bulldog head coach Matt Lewis commented. "Conditions were windy and most team scores were high because of it. For us, each individual had 2-3 bad holes and the big numbers really killed us."
McDonald is tied for 40th after his performance, while sophomore Blake Huser (Altoona, Iowa) is three shots back after firing an 80, a mark that is tied for 64th place.
"Will (McDonald) led us with 77 playing well with the exception of a couple holes," said Lewis.
Junior Matt Ohl (Milford, Iowa), sophomore Dane Worley (Des Moines, Iowa) and redshirt sophomore Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) concluded first-day action recording scores of 82, 83 and 84 to stand tied for 77th, 81st and 87th, respectively.
"We are going to go out tomorrow and attempt to avoid the same mistakes and go low," Lewis explained. "Winds are supposed to be down, so conditions should be favorable to shoot some low scores."
The Bulldogs continue their stay at the ODU/Outer Banks Invitational on Monday (Oct. 22) teeing off starting at 7:30 CT.
