Bluejays Defeat The Bulldogs, 3-0 Saturday Night
OMAHA, Neb. - The Drake University volleyball was defeated by Creighton University, 3-0, Saturday night in Omaha., Neb.
Game scores were 25-23, 25-14 and 25-11. The loss drops the Bulldogs overall record to 1-12 and 0-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Creighton improves to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in the MVC.
"We are learning more about ourselves each match and we pushed through some adversity in that early set to remain competitive and we nearly took the opener," head coach Tony Sunga commented. "We have to work on maintaining that intensity in all sets and we have to do a better job of taking care of our side of the net."
Freshman outside hitter Katie Dulek (Lenexa, Kan.) led the Bulldogs with a career-high eight kills and had just one error. Amanda Platte (Mount Vernon, Iowa) and Jadranka Tramosljanin (Ruma, Serbia) each had six kills. Halli Meyer (Bettendorf, Iowa) dished out a team-best 11 assists and Sarah Madden (Van Meter, Iowa) had a match-high three service aces and added 15 digs to lead the Bulldogs in both categories.
Dulek led off the match with back-to-back kills to give Drake an early 2-0 lead. The two teams traded points and the match was tied at 11 after a kill by Tramosljanin. Creighton took the lead with a 5-0 run that forced a Drake timeout at 16-11. Drake charged back to tie the set at 20-20 after a Creighton attack error, but the Bluejays used another run to take a 23-20 lead. This time it was the Bulldogs turn to go on a run as another kill by Tramosljanin cut the deficit to 24-23. The rally fell just short after a kill by Leah McNary gave the Bluejays the opening set.
Creighton raced to an early 8-0 lead in the second and the Bulldogs couldn't recover as the Bluejays won the set, 25-14. The Bluejays had a strong attack with 13 kills and just two errors and a .379 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs struggled at the net with just nine kills and eight errors.
The Bluejays staked a 10-4 lead in set three after a kill by Melanie Jereb. Back-to-back service aces by Madden helped Drake cut the CU lead to 10-7 but that would be as close as the Bulldogs would be in the final set. Creighton went on a 15-4 run to take the match with the final point coming from a Bulldogs' attack error.
McNary led the Bluejays with 12 kills and setter Megan Bober, a two-time all-MVC selection had a match-high 31 assists.
