Football Set to Host No. 4 Montana State
Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 515-271-DOGS or clicking here. The contest will also be broadcast over the airwaves on 1350-AM KRNT.
The Bulldogs have had a long week to prepare after opening the season with a 28-8 victory over Grand View last Thursday. The defense made its mark in the opener with a Division I leading nine sacks while allowing just 241 yards of total offense.
"Our defensive line has led this program in the five years that I've been here and with the start that we had last week, things are no different," head coach Chris Creighton said. "I'm really proud of those guys that have stepped up and it's a formidable crew."
That crew will face a Montana State offense that racked up 214 rushing yards in its opener, a 33-6 win over Chadron State. The passing game came through as well with DeNarius McGhee throwing for four touchdowns. However, Creighton is most concerned with his squad's special teams heading into the contest.
"We were very disappointed with our special teams and turnovers," Creighton said. "We talk about that being the keys to the game and even though we won a major battle on special teams with the blocked punt for a touchdown - overall - we lost in special teams and got crushed in turnovers. You can't live that way and that's something that's got to change Saturday."
The MSU sideline will also feature a familiar face as Bobcat head coach Rob Ash returns to Des Moines. Ash spent 18 seasons roaming the sidelines at Drake from 1989-2006 as the Bulldogs' head coach. The winningest coach in Drake history, his teams went 125-63-2 and won four Pioneer Football League titles. Since taking over at Montana State, he has guided the Bobcats to a 40-20 record and back-to-back shared Big Sky Conference titles.
The two squads have met twice before with the most recent meeting being in 2010. That contest saw MSU prevail, 48-21, on its home turf. In 1940, Drake hosted MSU and came away with a 56-0 victory.
Following Saturday's game, the Bulldogs will get their first road test and final non-conference game of the season at Indiana State on Sept. 15.
