DEVENS, MASS. ? Drake sophomore Michelle Mathwick (Greenfield, Wis.) and Drake junior Amanda Vogt (Melbourne, Iowa/Marshalltown) missed opportunities to advance into the first round of match play at the 2009 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship Tuesday.
Mathwick concluded the second qualifying round with a 74-80=154 at the 6,267 yard, par-72 Rd Tail Golf Club. Vogt posted a 90-84=174 total.
The cut came at eight-over 152 with an 11-for-6 playoff for the final spots.
"It is still quite an honor for our program to have two players out of 156 nationwide qualify for the USGA Women's Public Links Championships which is arguably the second most prestigious event for amateur women in the United States," said Drake golf coach Scott Bohlender.
Stephanie Kono, 19, of Honolulu, Hawaii, fired a 70-68?138, six under par, to capture medalist honors.
The first round of match play starts Wednesday concluding with a 36-hole final on Saturday
The Women's Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted by the United States Golf Association, of which 10 are strictly for amateurs.
