Key component of strong junior class that forms the nucleus of Drake's experienced and talented roster. VanDeest has played in 62 games (all starts) in his first two seasons and averages 8.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per game...underwent shoulder surgery in July 2011 that will keep him out of action at least through the early-going of the season.

 

2012-13 -- Scored 12 points and matched a season-high with eight rebounds at Missouri State ... is 36-of-62 from the field in the last 12 games ... scored a season-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting with the eventual game-winning baskets against NC Central ... had 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting against Iowa State ... led Drake with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting against Saint Mary’s ... scored 12 of his 14 points against Nevada in the second half and was 5-of-7 from the field in 16 minutes ... played a season-high 32 minutes with 12 points against Rice after scoring 13 points with four assists against Cal ... scored 10 points in 18 minutes on 4-of-6 shooting with six rebounds and two assists ... scored seven points with four boards in 17 minutes against William Jewell ... started and scored 15 points in the exhibition against SBU. 

2010-11 (Sophomore) -- Played in 29 games (all starts), averaging 8.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.

  • Turned in 12 double-figure scoring efforts, including a career-best 26-point performance against Southern Utah (11/24) at the Great Alaska Shootout.
  • Had seven games registering seven or more rebounds.
  • Posted first career double-double with 13-point, 10-rebound effort in home win over Boise State (12/12).
  • Ranked 10th in the Missouri Valley Conference in free throw percentage (.770), while finishing seventh in free throw percentage in league-only games (.807).
  • Led the squad in rebounding and assists a team-high eight times, while pacing the squad in scoring six times.
  • Member of Global Sports Academy All-Star basketball team that traveled through Europe in August 2010.

2009-10 (Freshman) — Named to Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team, VanDeest started all 33 games at center, averaging 8.5 points and 4.2 rebounds while shooting 48.8 percent.

  • Ranked second in the MVC in blocked shots with a Drake freshman single-season school-record 45 (1.4 avg.).
  • Two-time MVC Newcomer of Week, earning honor Feb. 1 after averaging 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots in two games; as well as Feb. 22 after averaging 13.5 points, while shooting 62.5 percent from the floor in wins vs. Southern Illinois and Cal State Northridge.
  • Set Drake freshman single-season free throws made record (80), and ranked third on Drake freshman single-season scoring (279) and rebounding (139) chart.
  • Scored in double figures in 11 games, while leading team in rebounding eight times.
  • Had 20 points, while tying a career high with four blocked shots in win vs. Creighton. Also had career-high four blocked shots at Wichita State and at Evansville.
  • Named to Drake Invitational All-Tournament team after making nine of 11 shots en route to career-high 21 points vs. Binghamton. Also named to Hy-Vee Classic All-Tournament team after averaging 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds.
  • Blocked two shots against UNI's 7-foot center Jordan Eglseder in opening three minutes of road game.
  • Had career-high nine rebounds vs. Bradley.
  • Scored 17 points at Wichita State and had 15 points vs. SIU Edwardsville and Iowa.
  • Collected 10 points, five rebounds and two blocked shots in college starting debut vs. IUPUI.

High School — Earned first-team Iowa Class 4A all-state honors by The Des Moines Register, Iowa Newspaper Association and IowaPreps.com...led Bettendorf High to a fourth-place finish in the 2009 Iowa Class 4A state tournament...averaged 17.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.1 blocked shots as a senior while helping team post a 21-5 mark...named Mississippi Valley Conference Player of the Year...also named captain of 2009 Quad Cities All-Metro team...guided Bettendorf to a 19-4 record including a second-place conference finish in 2008...earned second team all-league honors as junior...averaged 8.0 points and 5.0 rebounds, while shooting 58 percent from the floor in 2007-08.
