DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men’s and women’s track and field teams had a successful evening at the Drake Relays with five personal bests set during Thursday’s Distance Carnival.

While all of the personal bests were substantial marks, a pair of Des Moines natives and Roosevelt products in Conor Wells and Emma Huston running great races was a fitting end to Thursday’s action on the Blue Oval.

Wells was seventh in the 10,000 meters with a personal best of 30:12.42.

“It’s probably one of the best experience of my running career ,” Wells said. “Relays my freshman year was really special and last year I got hurt right before the meet. Coming back meant a lot.”

The junior knew he faced a substantial challenge against Relays competition but his pre-race plan allowed him to finish strong.

“I knew it was a good field,” Wells said. “I wanted to go out, be competitive and hang tough. I think I did that for the most part.”

Also in the men’s 10,000 meters, freshman Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.) turned in a personal best of 30:54.02 to finish in 23rd place. That time is the sixth fastest by an under-20-year-old collegian in the U.S.

The women’s races also saw personal bests from Huston in the 5,000 meters with a 16:40.11 finish and Erin Poss in the 10,000 meters in 36:43.06.

“I wasn’t sure what time to expect, but I PR-ed today, so I was excited,” Huston said of her ninth place finish. “I’m from Iowa and it’s my home track and it’s awesome to have all this support.”

For their coach, the night full of personal bests was gratifying and promises to help with coaching going forward.

“It helps with the confidence, running well,” said Drake distance coach Dan Hostager. “They’ve been putting in work all year and now they can have some fun with it.”

The Bulldogs will return to competition on Friday at the Drake Relays with competitors in select events. Other members of the team will compete in the Kip Janvrin Invitational at nearby Simpson College.
