The Drake University football team, under the direction of first-year head coach Rick Fox, is set to host its annual spring game Saturday, April 19 at Drake Stadium. The contest, which marks the end of the Bulldogs’ spring practices, is set to begin at 1 p.m.

As the Bulldogs enter their final practices leading up the intra-squad game, the team and staff can feel the excitement building for Saturday’s contest.

“They should be feeling the same type of build you feel during a game week in the fall,” Fox said. “You feel Saturday getting closer and the tension rising. I think we feel that. We want this Saturday to feel like a game for our guys.”

Saturday’s game will pit the defense and offense against each other rather than separating into two full, distinct rosters. That decision was a by-product of the staff attempting to maximize the team’s practice time with a pair of new coordinators in defensive coordinator Todd Stepsis and pass-game coordinator Brad Pole.

“We have a new defensive coordinator and a new pass-game coordinator so it’s good for us to be together in our groups fine-tuning and perfecting,” Fox said.

The defense will be awarded two points for a three-and-out, five points for a turnover and 11 points total points for a defensive touchdown. The offense can get on the board via a touchdown or a field goal and can earn one point for a first down and a point for a play of 20-plus yards.

Fox anticipates the competition to be spirited in his first spring game as head coach with the offense and defense getting the opportunity to hit the turf in pads for the final time before pre-season practices get underway in August.

“Our guys love to compete and we love to play this game together,” Fox said. “We’ll compete hard because there’s pride on the line but we’re always playing together as a family.”

Following Saturday’s spring  game, the Bulldogs will resume offseason workouts as they prepare for the upcoming 2014 season.
