CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Drake University softball team split its doubleheader at in-state rival Northern Iowa Tuesday night. Drake won the first game, 4-1, but UNI took the second game, 6-0. Both games were played in the UNI-Dome.

In the opening contest, UNI (22-14, 9-7 MVC) struck first as Caitlin Wnek had an RBI single to put the Panthers up 1-0 in the third inning.

Drake (14-25, 6-8 MVC) quickly answered the following frame as it pulled off a double steal with runners on first and second base. A wide throw by the catcher trying to get pinch runner freshman Maddie Hooyman (Trenton, Mo.) at third base went into the outfield and allowed Hooyman to score as the Bulldogs tied the game. One batter later, junior Laura Brewer (Waukee, Iowa) dropped in an RBI single and senior Cortney Wood (Alburnett, Iowa) followed with a double into the right field gap to take a 3-1 lead. Junior Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) then ripped a ground rule double that brought Wood in to extend the lead to 4-1.

Brewer, Amy Pierce, Schmidt, Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) and Wood each had one hit in game one. Schmidt pitched 4.2 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit, while striking out five Panthers. She earned her eighth-straight win to improve to 13-10 on the year.

A pair of three-run home runs from UNI was the difference in game two. The first home run was hit by Julia Hunter which made the score 3-0 in the bottom of the second. The second home run occurred in the fifth inning by Gina Brown to extend the lead to 6-0.

Chelsea Ross tossed a shutout in the last game as she held Drake to one hit, while striking out eight. Sophomore Mariah McKinnon (Oxford, Iowa) took the loss for the Bulldogs as her record falls to 1-8 on the season.

Pierce had Drake’s only hit, while Sowa drew two walks and the team had six.

The Bulldogs return to Ron Buel Field on Friday, April 18 to host first-place Wichita State with the teams playing a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
