DES MOINES, Iowa - Former Drake women’s soccer standout Megan Fisher has been afforded a unique opportunity to extend her playing career as she has accepted a scholarship offer to play this season at Durham University in Durham, England.

A three-time first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference performer for the Bulldogs from 2010-13, Fisher started all 78 games of her career directing a defensive unit that posted 22 shutouts during her four seasons, including a school-record nine during her freshman campaign.

“I’m very excited to pursue my masters degree at Durham and thankful for the opportunity,” Fisher commented. “I owe a big thank you to the coaching staff at Drake for preparing me the past four years on and off the field, as well as encouraging me to continue to play. The continued support from everyone at Drake and my family has been amazing and I hope to make the Drake community proud at Durham next year.”

Fisher will graduate from Drake in May with a degree in health sciences and will pursue a master’s degree in science and management at Durham, the third-oldest university in England.

The Durham University Women’s Association Football Club (DUWAFC) saw its 2012-13 first-team squad finish second in its division and reach the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) final. DUWAFC also benefit from a second team, which competed in a BUCS league, and a strong link with Durham Women’s Football Club, a Women’s Super League 2 team, allowing University players to take part in a national league on weekends as well as compete in the Women’s FA Cup competition.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Megan; one she is prepared for after four years with our program, but it will also challenge her to continue to grow academically, as a player, and as a person, which is always a great thing,” said Drake head coach Lindsey Horner. “Megan is an elite athlete, a decorated player, and the ultimate competitor so she will adapt quickly as she is immersed into a more technical based game.  To do this while pursuing her master’s degree is not only a great fit for the next phase in her life, but it is going to create a lot of opportunities for her in the near future.”
