Softball Drops Games To UAB And No. 14 Missouri
WACO, Texas – The Drake University softball team dropped games to UAB and No. 14 Missouri today by scores of 8-0 and 9-0, respectively, on the second day of the Getterman Classic.
Against UAB, Drake’s best chance to put runs on the scoreboard occurred in the fourth inning with base runners on first and second base with one out. However, the Bulldogs’ bats went cold as Leigh Streetman struck out Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) and worked a flyout by pinch hitter Cortney Wood (Alburnett, Iowa) to escape the jam.
Streetman tossed six innings allowing two hits and working around three walks and two hit batters to earn the win. Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) pitched five innings allowing seven runs (three earned) on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts. She took the loss to fall to 0-4 on the young season.
Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Liz Buck (Overland Park, Kan.) had Drake’s only hits of the game.
Missouri erupted for eight runs in the opening inning as the Bulldogs struggled with hit batters, passed balls and wild pitches. Mackenzie Sykes added a solo home run in the second inning for the Tigers final run.
Sykes struck again in the fourth frame when she robbed Nybo of a home run, pulling the ball back over the left field fence. Freshman Maddie Hooyman (Trenton, Mo.) had Drake’s only hit of the contest when she beat out an infield single later that inning.
Sophomore Mariah McKinnon (Oxford, Iowa) started for the Bulldogs and earned the loss to drop to 0-2 on the year. Schmidt came on in relief and pitched well allowing just two runs on three hits, while striking out four Tigers.
Drake closes the Getterman Classic against in-state rival Iowa on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
