Drake Falls To Lipscomb And No. 14/16 Baylor On Opening Day Of Getterman Classic
WACO, Texas – The Drake University softball team lost 8-0 to Lipscomb and 4-2 to No. 14/16 Baylor on the opening day of the Getterman Classic hosted by the Lady Bears.
In the first game against Lipscomb, the Lady Bisons jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a home run by Paige Neely in the first inning. Neely added a two-run double in the fourth frame to extend the lead to 4-0 and Lipscomb ended the contest early with four runs in the sixth.
Ashley Anderson went six innings and held Drake (0-6) to just three hits to earn the win, while Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) earned the loss to fall to 0-3 on the year. Schmidt pitched four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Against Baylor, Drake trailed 1-0 after the first frame as the Lady Bears pushed a run across with a RBI double by Sarah Smith. Buck’s RBI base knock evened the game at 1-1 the next inning.
Lindsey Cargill’s two-run blast the in the third inning and an RBI base hit in the fourth put Baylor up 4-1.
Pierce hit her second home run of the season with one out in the seventh inning to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. After freshman Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) flied out, Randel ripped a single up the middle, but she was stranded as pinch hitter Hayley Nybo (Minnetonka, Minn.) lined out to the shortstop to end the contest.
Drake starter Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) took the loss going two innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. Gronewold took the loss as she drops to 0-2 on the season.
Drake takes on UAB and No. 14 Missouri tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. The Bulldogs close the Getterman Classic with a contest against in-state rival Iowa on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
