CHICAGO – The Drake University softball team dropped a pair of one-run games on the opening day of the  Rosemont Rumble at the Dome at Rosemont. IUPUI defeated Drake, 3-2, in today’s first contest while Central Michigan edged the Bulldogs, 1-0, in the nightcap.

Drake (0-2) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage against IUPUI with a leadoff home run to start the game from senior Amy Pierce (Olathe, Kan.), who added another run with a RBI double in the second inning. The Bulldogs tacked on one more run in the frame off an RBI groundout.

IUPUI (1-1) answered with two runs off of starter Jordan Gronewold (Carlisle, Iowa) in its next trip to the plate. Gronewold was replaced by sophomore Mariah McKinnon (Oxford, Iowa) the next inning as the Jaguars tallied two runs off McKinnon, who took the loss going 0.2 innings, allowing two runs on one hit with one walk.

The Bulldogs had runners on first and second base with two outs in the final inning, but Gronewold grounded out to the shortstop to end the game.

Pierce finished 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while senior Liz Buck (Overland Park, Kan.) had two hits, one run scored and one walk.

Junior Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) started against Central Michigan (1-0) and took the tough loss, tossing six innings allowing one run on three hits, while striking out eight. One costly pitch was the difference as Schmidt allowed a second inning solo blast to Trista Cox.

Drake’s bats struggled against the Chippewas with just three hits. Senior Nicole Randel (Alpine, Calif.) led the Bulldogs with a first inning double. Freshman Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) pinch ran for Randel and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was later stranded. Sowa later added a hit in the fourth inning. Junior Laura Brewer (Waukee, Iowa) had the other hit for the Bulldogs.

Chelsea Sunberg pitched well for the Chippewas going the distance for the win, while striking out six.

Drake returns to action tomorrow with two games in its final day of the tournament. Up first is an 11:30 a.m. rematch with Central Michigan followed by an evening game against Western Illinois at 7 p.m.
