ST. LOUIS – Freshman forward Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) has been selected the Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball Newcomer of the Week for the third time this season, the league office announced Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Wendell scored 13 points, going nearly perfect across the board at 4-of-4 from the floor, 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 2-of-3 from the free throw line, in Drake’s 79-57 win over Milwaukee last week.

The Blue Springs, Mo., native is averaging 12.5 points per game, which ranks second on the squad and is pulling down 6 rebounds per game. She is averaging the second-highest point total among freshmen in The Valley behind only Sara Dickey of Evansville, who leads the conference at 19.2 points per game.

Wendell was previously named MVC Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 11 and Dec. 2. She is the first Drake player to win the newcomer award three times in a season since Jill Martin and Whitney Pegram each accomplished the feat during the 2003-04 campaign.

Drake starts MVC action Friday, Jan. 3 at Illinois State with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. at Redbird Arena.
