DES MOINES, Iowa The Drake University women’s basketball team never trailed against Idaho State defeating the Bengals, 78-59, on Thursday, Dec. 5 at the Knapp Center.

The Bulldogs (4-4) were led by freshman Lizzy Wendell’s (Blue Springs, Mo.) first career double-double, recording 20 points and 11 rebounds, both career-highs. After a quiet start to the season, redshirt junior Carly Grenfell (York, Neb.) exploded for season-highs with 14 points and four three-pointers.

Sophomore Ashley Bartow (Sun Prairie, Wis.), junior Kyndal Clark (Webb City, Mo.) and senior Alyssa Marschner (Plymouth, Minn.) rounded out the Bulldogs scoring as each finished in double-figures with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.

“We had great energy at the beginning of the game,” said head coach Jennie Baranczyk. “It was such a team effort tonight. Idaho State is a tough, scrappy team.”

Execution from beyond the arc was key for the Bulldogs in their victory. Drake, the leading three-point shooting team in the Missouri Valley Conference, shot 42.3 percent (11-of-26) from three-point range. Idaho State (2-5) was kept in check, converting just 3-of-19 (15.7 percent) in the same category. The Bulldogs finished the game with an edge in rebounding margin at 45-39. Marschner pulled down nine boards, while Bartow and Clark each chipped in six.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an 8-0 lead early in the game, and played tough defense, not allowing Idaho State to score its first points until 16:23 on the clock. Clark hit back-to-back three-pointers, both assisted by Marschner to push the lead to 12-2, forcing the Bengals to call a timeout before the under-16 break.

Drake used its early momentum to cruise through the first half taking a 43-28 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Bulldogs were fueled by eight three-pointers, matching a season-high in a half, which previously happened at Colorado State. Drake’s 43 points in the first half is also a season-high in an opening half.

Three Bulldogs scored in double-figures in the first half, with Grenfell leading the way with 11 points. Bartow and Wendell each tallied 10 points, while Clark had nine. Clark and Marschner both grabbed six boards in the first half to lead all players.

With a comfortable scoring margin in double-figures in its favor in the second half, Drake’s lead never dipped below double-digits as they pulled away for the win.

“There were some things that we didn’t do well that Idaho State exposed us on,” said Baranczyk. “But there were some really great things we did. That’s how the game went. I’m proud of our effort because even though we didn’t play great. We found a way to win.”

Drake will take a break for finals before returning to action at the Knapp Center on December 17 against SIU-Edwardsville. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
