SEATTLE The Drake University women’s basketball team dropped its first game of the 2013 Delta Dental Thanksgiving Tournament to Cornell University, 59-49, on Friday, Nov. 29. The Bulldogs struggled from the floor shooting just 36 percent against the Big Red at the Connolly Center on the campus of Seattle University.

Drake (2-4) could never get in an offensive rhythm as it held just one lead in the contest. Junior Kyndal Clark (Webb City, Mo.), who scored a team-high 12 points, put the Bulldogs ahead at 34-33 after her runner fell with 12:42 to go. However, Cornell (3-4) answered with eight-straight points and held the Bulldogs scoreless for over four minutes to take control of the game for good.

Redshirt junior Carly Grenfell (York, Neb.) ended the scoring drought with a layup at the 8:17 mark, but it was not enough to overcome Cornell, who knocked down 14-of-20 from the free throw line in the half, to help pull away for the victory.

Junior Liza Heap (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and freshman Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) each had 10 points for the Bulldogs, while Grenfell added nine points off the bench. Heap tied a career-high with eight rebounds.

Kerri Moran scored 14 points to pace the Big Red, while Nia Marshall added a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Allyson DiMagno was the other Cornell player to finish in double-digits with 11 points. Cornell outrebounded Drake, 46-33, including pulling down 19 offensive boards to just 10 for the Bulldogs.

Clark buried a three-pointer three minutes into the game to put Drake on the scoreboard and added another bucket as the Bulldogs were down 10-5 at the first official timeout with 15:20 remaining. Cornell extended its lead to 19-7 before Drake answered with a 7-0 scoring run and forced the Big Red to call their first timeout leading 19-14.

Drake fought its way back to go into halftime trailing by just three points at 28-25. Seven Bulldogs scored led by Clark, Grenfell and Wendell who each scored five points. Both squads relied on the three-pointer as the Big Red knocked down four, while the Bulldogs hit three.

The Bulldogs held the Big Red to just 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the floor, but Cornell finished 15-of-23 from the free throw line and also knocked down six three pointers.

Drake will take on either the host’s, Seattle, or Coastal Carolina tomorrow afternoon (Nov. 30) at 6 p.m. CST.

“We didn’t shot the ball well tonight,” said Baranczyk. “We had good looks, but they didn’t fall. We need to figure that out before tomorrow when we face Seattle or Coastal Carolina, who are both good teams.”
