Drake Menís Cross Country Runners Earn Pair of MVC Honors
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Drake men’s cross country junior Conor Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) and redshirt junior Doug Brady (Englewood, Colo.) have both been recognized by the Missouri Valley Conference this week for their achievements in the classroom, in the community and on the course.
Wells was one of 10 MVC student-athletes across all fall sports awarded the MVC Leadership & Service Award. The award is given to honor the achievements of exceptional student-athletes who are in good academic standing and who demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service.
From his volunteering and planning with the Best Buddies Club and organizing recruiting efforts for Everybody Wins! Iowa, to on-campus involvement with Math Club and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Wells has shown his passion for service and involvement. On top of his commitment to service, involvement, and Drake athletics, he has maintained high academic standing with a sterling 4.0 grade point average throughout his three years at Drake. It is the second such award for Wells, who was also named to the 2013 Spring MVC Leadership & Service Award.
Doug Brady was named to the prestigious 2013 Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Team. Brady was Drake’s top finisher in 17th place at the MVC Conference Championship meet on Nov. 2 while maintaining a 3.42 GPA in his accounting and marketing coursework.
To be named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team, student-athletes must finish among the first 20 runners at the conference championship, hold at least a cumulative 3.2 GPA and be a sophomore in athletic and academic standing. Brady was one of only six men in the conference to achieve such success in competition and the classroom.
The men’s cross country team will take a week off from competition to prepare for its next outing at the NCAA Regional Championship in Ames, Iowa, on Friday, Nov. 15.
