Bulldogs Off To Fast Start On Day One Of Drake Fall Invitational
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Drake women’s tennis team got off to a strong start at the Drake Fall Invitational on Friday (Sept. 13) as the Bulldogs posted a 10-3 record in combined singles/doubles matches.
Drake advanced all three of its doubles teams into the main draw to remain in contention for the two doubles crowns up for grabs.
“Today was a great day to see how the girls incorporated their practices towards their first actual tournament,” Drake head coach Sadhaf Pervez commented. “I am very pleased in how we competed and took care of the things that we can control. Being our first competition, I’m very happy in how the team played in both singles and doubles and I’m excited for the rest of the weekend.”
In the top flight, the tandem of junior Nell Boyd (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and sophomore Jordan Eggleston (LaQuinta, Calif.) moved into the championship match following a pair of 8-4 triumphs past Stephanie Catlin and Beth Coton of Northern Colorado and Caroline Andersen and Ksenia Pronina of Iowa State, respectively.
In the bottom half of the draw, sophomore Lea Kozulic (Varazdin, Croatia) and senior Klavdija Rebol (Kranj, Slovenia) will oppose Boyd and Eggleston in the title tilt after downing Jacqueline Baude and Alex Tran of Nebraska Omaha, 8-6, and Jennie Hartjes and Katherine Nelsen of Creighton, 8-6.
In the 'B' flight, sophomore Mariel Ante (Riverside, Calif.) and Maddie Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) won their lone match of the afternoon, 8-6, over Adriana Nieto and Hilary Walters-West of Northern Colorado, to advance to the semifinal round.
On the singles court, the Bulldogs notched a 6-1 mark to advance six players into the quarterfinal round.
In the ‘A’ draw, Johnson bested Analese Snyder of Creighton, 6-3, 6-3, while Boyd garnered a 6-1, 6-2 decision past Nieto of Northern Colorado.
Recording victories in the ‘B’ flight for Drake was Kozulic and Ante. Kozulic netted a 6-1, 6-0 win versus Taylor Schumacher from Northern Colorado, while Ante bettered Lindsay Weideman of Nebraska Omaha, 6-1, 6-0.
In the final draw, Eggleston advanced on the strength of a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tiffany Hottman of Northern Colorado.
Competition at the Drake Fall Invitational resumes on Saturday (Sept. 14) beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
